We were first introduced to Jeanne Benoit, a beautiful doctor, in Season 4. What fans didn't know at the time is that DiNozzo was working undercover as "Tony DiNardo" and started dating Jeanne to get closer to her father, infamous arms dealer René Benoit (a.k.a. La Grenouille).

Things heat up between DiNozzo and Jeanne

At first, DiNozzo viewed his relationship with Jeanne as just another assignment, but his views quickly changed after he started spending more time with her. After a month of dating, the couple became more serious and took their relationship to the next level. DiNozzo even went so far as to ask Director Jenny Shepard for dating advice.

DiNozzo busts out his culinary skills for a romantic dinner

He may have been going by another name, but DiNozzo's core remained the same. He charmed Jeanne with his pop culture references and goofy jokes, constantly making her laugh and smile. One night, he prepared a dinner for Jeanne that was based entirely on a scene of a film the two liked.

DiNozzo fails to follow through on a promise to Jeanne

The honeymoon stage of the relationship came to a screeching halt when DiNozzo couldn't muster up the courage to tell Jeanne he loved her. Before racing each other in a wall climbing competition, the couple promised each other that the first person to reach the top would profess their love for the other. But, when it came time for DiNozzo to say those three magic words to Jeanne, he clammed up.

Hurt, Jeanne went home and refused to answer Tony's calls for days. Eventually, she contacted DiNozzo and told him how she truly felt, challenging him to determine if he felt the same way.

DiNozzo finally drops the "L-bomb"

After an intense shootout involving NCIS, DiNozzo realized he needed to tell Jeanne his true feelings before it was too late. He rushed to her home, said "I love you," and gave her a passionate kiss.

Jeanne is evicted from her apartment, sparking a big conversation

When Jeanne was kicked out of her home, DiNozzo proposed that they move in together. Immediately after suggesting a joint living space, DiNozzo realized what a problem that would be—he was, after all, pretending to be someone he wasn't. He ultimately had to tell Jeanne that he wasn't ready for such a big step quite yet.

Learning that your father was a notorious criminal would be difficult on its own. Just imagine how Jeanne must have felt after discovering that her boyfriend had lied to her about his identity, too. Heartbroken, Jeanne broke up with DiNozzo and left him a letter saying he had to choose between her and NCIS if he wanted to mend things.

Jeanne accuses DiNozzo of murder

After learning that her father had been killed, Jeanne immediately blamed DiNozzo for his death. The accusation sparked a major internal investigation and put DiNozzo's career on the line.

Jeanne's heart is broken once again

Although DiNozzo was proven innocent in La Grenouille's murder, Jeanne wasn't ready to forget and forgive. As the two came face-to-face for the last time, she asked him if any of their relationship was real, to which he responded, "No."

DiNozzo and Jeanne try to get closure in Sudan

When a group of insurgents attacked a team of volunteer doctors in South Sudan, NCIS Special Agent Stan Burley enlisted the D.C. branch for help finding the survivors—one of whom just happened to be Jeanne Benoit's husband, Dr. David Woods. Determined to make up for his past mistakes, DiNozzo vowed to do everything in his power to find Dr. Woods and bring him back to Jeanne.

Of course, DiNozzo lived up to his word, and Jeanne was soon back out of his life as quickly as she had returned. But before they said their farewells, DiNozzo and Jeanne shared a heart-to-heart, resulting in what they thought was much-needed closure. Little did they know, they would soon be rehashing the past once again.

DiNozzo accidentally drudges up Jeanne's painful past

DiNozzo and Jeanne had thought they'd seen the last of each other after a dramatic—and dangerous—reunion in Season 13, but they couldn't have been more wrong. After a petty officer was found dead, the NCIS team learned that one of the men suspected of killing him was medically treated in Sudan. Determined to find the killers, DiNozzo knew he had to get in touch with someone with inside knowledge of medical work in the region, leading him straight to Jeanne Benoit.

While he promised Jeanne that the investigation had nothing to do with her father, DiNozzo later learned that the bullet used to kill the petty officer was traced back to a man with ties to La Grenouille. Feeling betrayed, Jeanne lashed out at her ex-boyfriend in front of her current husband.

Jeanne says her goodbyes again

Once the NCIS team wrapped up their investigation, DiNozzo went to clear the air with Jeanne. Apologizing for the way he made her feel, DiNozzo confessed that their breakup put him in an emotionally fragile state and that he would have liked things to be different.

"If I had one wish, Jeanne, I would turn back the clock to right when we got back from South Sudan, because I think that was a much better ending for both of us," he told her.

With a sliver of a smile, she bid him goodbye and walked out of his life once again.
